( ) 2GB overwrite problem

physdiskwrite v0.5.2

Searching for physical drives...
Which disk do you want to drive? <0..0>

Hi,

trying to load Astlinux image from HD to USB 4 GB drive (formatted)
I am asked if I want to overcome 2GB limit , selecting yes or no
opens DOS window
with the above text

Searching for physical drives...
Which disk do you want to drive? <0..0>

What should I enter in command line as 4 GB USB drive is denoted as G in
PhysGUI interface,
is G ok ?

Selecting : ( x) Remove 2GB restriction
DOS windows opens and closes immediately.

Not selecting ( ) Remove 2GB restriction

==========
DOS window

Which disk do you want to write? <0..0> G
That disk is larger than 2 GB ( <safety overwrite check>. Please choose another

one.
Which disk do you want to write? <0..0>

So should I partition G USB 2GB drive into 2 x 2GB partitions first ?

What format is ok for partition holding image ?
and what for send partition ?

Read http://m0n0.ch/wall/physdiskwrite.php

You can call "physdiskwrite.exe -u" to override the limit, but be
careful not to destroy your harddisk :-).

Call physdiskwrite first without the card attached. It will list all your
other drives. Exit without writing. Then attach the drive and call it again.
You can then select the drive which has appeared.

Thanks Tom,

There is no problem with device discovery (devices are denoted by letters not by
numbers.
USB 4 GB drive.

The problem is with 2 GB overwrite limit removal.

If I select (x) remove 2GB write limit new DOS window just flashes and closes.

==

Special considerations for Windows Vista/7
physdiskwrite works with Vista, but you must make sure to run it as
administrator (simply having admin rights isn't enough), or it won't find
any disks. One way to do this is to create a shortcut to cmd.exe, then
right-click it and select "run as administrator". Then you can launch
physdiskwrite from the command prompt window that appears, and it should
work fine.

==
//
0.5.1: increased safety overwrite limit to 2 GB (instead of 800 MB); can still
be overridden with -u

---\\

Maybe I should use DOS CLI ?

Maybe I should use DOS CLI ?
I always have, not least because if there is an error, the DOS box will stay
on screen rather than disappearing immediately. Plus, you can then just use
the -u switch.

Ok.
So what is meant by drive number to developers of Physdiskwrite ?
as PhysGUI comes with letters not numbers, denoting drives.

I have one hard drive made of 2 partitions: C: and D:

USB drive is listed as G:

Is it ok to select "3" for USB drive as number ?

as numbering starts from "0", what is drive numbered "0" ?

Why there is no drive numbering coming with PhysGUI ?

This is why you should run the CLI physdiskwrite first without the disk you
want to write to in place, then cancel. Insert the disk, rerun, and you will
see which disk is now present which was not before. You can then select that
one by the number which is given in the list of drives.

Obviously, WARNING: make sure you are confident before doing any of this, or
you can overwrite your OS.

I am really sorry, but how can I get info on drive number running
physdiskwrite from DOS CLI (as admin now) ?

All I get is help text on usage and parameters and -d stays for driveno (no
confirmation prompts).

So I must to know driveno in advance (I assume so).

Run PhysGUI once again, as admin and selected USB drive G, right mouse
click and after some data transfer CLI DOS window closed

Disk FAT32 has no data.
